Braces are used to correct various problems with your teeth, jaws, or both. Oral problems, or Malocclusion (bad bite) can exist because you are born with it or can be a result of habits like thumb sucking, mouth breathing and tongue thrusting. Braces will help to correct these problems and give you a healthy, beautiful smile you can be proud of.
Orthodontic treatment will begin depending on the dental problems and the maturity of the jaws and teeth.
It is recommended by The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) that an orthodontic check-up take place no later than the age of 7.
Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing. It also may result in less complicated treatment that extends for a shorter length of time if it is needed at a later age.
Additional benefits of early treatment include:
- Influences jaw growth in a positive manner
- Improves the width of the smile
- Reduces the need to extract permanent teeth
- Corrects harmful oral habits
- Improves esthetics and self-esteem
- Improves speech development
- Guides teeth into a more favorable position
- Reduces the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
- Improves lip position
- Preserve or gain space for erupting permanent teeth
- Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
- Increase stability of final treatment results
It is important to us that every visit you make to our office is a pleasant experience beginning with your first. During your initial visit Dr. Linaker will do a thorough examination of your teeth, mouth, jaws, and face to evaluate your oral health and orthodontic needs.
Once the examination is complete, Dr. Linaker will discuss his findings and provide potential treatment options. A written printout of his findings along with a complete list of the costs will be provided for your convenience.
If you are ready to begin orthodontic treatment, the next step is to take Diagnostic Records, which will provide more detailed information about your teeth and jaws.
Once these records are completed Dr. Linaker will carefully and thoroughly study the results in order to develop a personalized treatment plan. The treatment plan will be presented and discussed at your "Consultation" visit.
Diagnostic Records include:
- X-rays – A panoramic radiograph of your entire jaw and surrounding area. Impacted, missing, or extra teeth can be viewed on this x-ray. A Cephalometric radiograph provides a profile view of the craniofacial structures allowing the skeletal growth and development to be evaluated.
- Photographs – full face, profile and itraoral photographs are taken to evaluate facial features and dental structures.
- Impressions of the upper and lower teeth from which a plaster model of your teeth is generated.
- Articulated models of your teeth to adequately diagnose bite problems related to improper alignment of the jaws.
Consultation Visit includes:
- A review of the findings from the diagnostic records.
- A detailed explanation of the treatment necessary to achieve the optimum orthodontic results.
- An explanation of the treatment process and estimated length of treatment.
