When gentle pressure is applied to the teeth over time the surrounding bone that supports the teeth slowly begins to move and change shape. Bone breaks down on the side of the moving tooth to create room for that tooth. New bone will grow behind the shifting tooth to fill the gap and support the tooth in its new position.
Brackets are a piece of shaped metal or ceramic that is bonded directly to the teeth. Each bracket is specific to each tooth and has an exact prescription. The brackets have slots that hold the archwire.
Archwires come in various strengths and are bent to reflect the ideal bite. The archwire is threaded through the brackets and applies pressure to move the teeth.
Bands are metal rings that fit tightly around the back teeth. Depending on your specific treatment, bands may be placed to anchor wires in position or as an attachment for additional orthodontic appliances.
Ligatures are small rubber rings or thin metal tie wires that are used to fasten the archwire to the brackets.
Elastics are small rubber bands that when hooked onto the braces apply gentle pressure to move the teeth and jaws.
Different types of braces are available to you depending on your dental problems and on your personal preference.
Metal Brackets are made of stainless steal and are compact and durable. The archwire is held securely in place by the tiny “gates” on each bracket that close around the wire. Metal brackets are easier to maintain which makes them one of the more common types of brackets worn among patients.
Ceramic "Clear" Brackets are less noticeable than metal brackets because they blend in with the color of the teeth however they are larger in size. The archwire is attached to the brackets with the use of rubber tie rings or metal tie wires.
Invisalign is a relatively new system that uses a series of unnoticeable aligners to gradually move the teeth. Not all patients are the right candidates for Invisalign.
For some patients, headgear is an orthodontic appliance that is an integral part of their treatment. Headgear is a removable appliance that when anchored to the head and attached to the braces creates force that guides the growth of the face and jaws. It is essential to wear your headgear as instructed to achieve the best results.
Depending on the orthodontic treatment, some patients may wear removable appliances, retainers, before braces are placed. This is to help guide the growth of the jaws.
The retention process follows the removal of your orthodontic braces. Until your bone, gums and teeth adapt to their new position, retainers are used to hold everything in place. To prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position retainers must be worn as instructed.
